hi, i just got an amstaff, seemed very young, seller said they were 8 weeks, took him to vets - lovely little fella, full of life, all good, vet said he was only 6 weeks at the most - is this too young to be away from the mother - he seems to think my bitch pit/staff mix is the mother- any feeding advice etc.would be appreciated

Even a dog at 6 weeks will be on solid so just normal puppy food really..its more developnent reasons they are left in the litter a little bit older.

Yeah if the breeder was doing things right the pup should be eating soilds. Wetfood puppy food for now and around 13wks mix in the dry food Smile
If he isnt great on the soilds there is a supplement milk you can get_ Lactol Milk.
I Doubt he got his injections yet ? Well if he didnt he will be due them at 8wks and then at 12wk but im sure your vet explained all that.

He will most likely cry at night because he will be used to his mother being there. So a teddy or even get a blanket or something with the mothers scent on it will calm him a little more.

Oh BTW get some pics up Very Happy

at six weeks, he should be fine. young, but imo, not too. many breeders keep them til 8 weeks for a few reasons: health benefits they still get from the dams' milk which helps to build their immune system, they socialize longer with their littermates, but since you have a young one already, that should help. he should get his first series of vax, which will include: Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus, commonly called a 5 in1. but getting this at 7 weeks won't be a problem either.
i got a pup at 6 weeks and he adjusted fine.
if it's Science Diet you are feeding, i personally would not recommend that food. it's a very low quality food. but i'm not sure if we're referring to the same thing.
so long as your other pup has been regularily vaccinated and is UTD on his vax, the two being togeher should be ok.
wishing you the best of luck and yeah for sure, some pics would be great.

would it be hard to tell the difference in a 6 to 8 week pup? im just wondering how a vet would know, like if there 8 pups in a litter im sure the biggest and smallest would LOOK 2 weeks in the difference?

THANKS, for the replies, i thought it was unusual the vet could say six weeks - he looked in the mouth a lot - ur right though 6 or 8 weeks hard to tell the difference - the food is actually hills science plan - i looked at the red mills stuff , the irish food , but i could not see one for a young dog, will post pics later

My boy was the runt and was half the size of his bro's nd sis but we think he was 6 weeks even though they tell you that they are 8 weeks because of the costs alot of the breeders just try to get rid most of the time
